Question: What is the mechanism by which acquired B phenomenon occurs? What is the only blood group that can acquire it?
Answer: Bacteremia can cause RBC’s to acquire a B-like antigen due to a bacterial deacetylase that converts A antigens into the B like D-galactosamine. Only group A people can develop an acquired B-like antigen.
