The Division of Transfusion Medicine, under the direction of Dr. Melanie Kennedy, continues to provide outstanding service to our patients in the areas of blood banking, perioperative autologous transfusion and apheresis activities. In addition to Dr. Kennedy, faculty members who support this division include Drs. Leona Ayers, JoAnna Williams and Haifeng Wu. The recent establishment of photopheresis for the treatment of T cell lymphomas and graft versus host disease reflects the division’s ongoing collaboration with the Medical Center’s hematology/oncology and bone marrow transplant clinical colleagues. The division’s participation in a failure mode events analysis (FEMA) with the Medical Center’s Quality Department resulted in process improvements regarding the safety of the issuing, ordering and transfusion of blood products, transfusion of blood products. Additional steps were taken to reduce redundancy in the use of paper documents. There has been increased support of the bone marrow transplant program through quality initiatives targeted to increase patient satisfaction and improve informed consent.
