The Division of Nephropathology/Transplant Pathology/Electron Microscopy continues to grow. Our renal biopsy referral service extends to seven states. Our transplant biopsy volume also continues to grow and, in addition to renal allograft biopsies, we sign out all heart and pulmonary transplant biopsies. We also cover pancreas and liver allograft biopsies, if necessary. Dr. Tibor Nadasdy serves as the division director with support from Dr. Anjali Satoskar, Assistant Professor of Pathology. Dr. Daniel Sedmak also helps out with coverage, if necessary. The division is also supported by Dr. Gyongyi Nadasdy, Laboratory Manager and Ed Calomeni, Director of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory. The division is engaged in numerous research projects. Experimental studies related to humoral allograft rejection in mice are ongoing. One utilizes a presensitized renal allograft mouse model; the other a renal allograft model in CCR5 knockout mice. The relevance of antibody mediated rejection with peritubular capillary C4d deposition in human renal allografts in the chronic setting (after the first year of transplantation) is also being studied. Several collaborative studies with the Nephrology Division of the Department of Internal Medicine are ongoing. They include the pathogenesis of lupus nephritis and glomerular basement membrane disorders associated with hematuria, including the loin pain hematuria. Other clinical oriented projects, such as the relevance of periglomerular fibrosis in chronic renal diseases are also in progress.
