Dr. Michael Bissell continues as director of the Division of Clinical Chemistry, Special Functions and Toxicology. The clinical chemistry laboratory’s focus on quality control continues with ongoing implementation of extended Westgard-rules and analysis of variability by workstation and now includes standardized computerization of this activity utilizing the BioRad Unity Realtime software application. Collaborations continue with Biomedical Engineering on potential applications of nanotechnology in the clinical chemistry lab. Web-based image analysis and real-time archiving in support of improved electrophoresis interpretation continues successfully. Three of the immunochemistry platforms in the special functions laboratory have been automated and several assays that were previously performed in batch mode have been transferred to those platforms. Dr. Bissell continues to serve as Medical Review Officer for OSUMC's faculty/housestaff workplace drug testing program, and as Custodian of Records for the Toxicology Laboratory’s forensic drug testing program, providing court testimony throughout Ohio. Dr. Bissell serves on several OSUMC Committees including the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Executive Committee, and is a member of the College of American Pathologists Toxicology Resource Committee. He is entering his eighth year as Editor/Author of the Yearbook of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and as contributing editor of CAP TODAY The division welcomes Dr. Kenichi Tamama who joined the Ohio State University Medical Center as an Assistant Professor in September, 2007. Dr. Tamama joins the department following a clinical pathology residency. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pathology at the University of Pittsburgh which was partially funded through the CAP Foundation Scholar Program and during which he was awarded the ASIP Trainee Travel Award, ASIP Young Pathologist Fellowship for Experimental Biology and the ACLPS Paul E Strandjord Young Investigator Award. His research activities focus in the area of in vitro expansion and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.
