About OSURL

The Ohio State University Reference Laboratories (URL) was created in 1984 to make available the expertise of The Ohio State University Medical Center Clinical Laboratories to community health care institutions and professionals throughout Ohio.  The value URL offers to community laboratories is made up of many things:  its clinical setting; its regional focus, its educational opportunities, and its cooperative stance.  But most importantly it is made up of our people – our pathologists, Ph.D.s, physicians, laboratorians, customer service representatives, and couriers – who make the difference between just buying a service and forming a lasting, mutually beneficial partnership.

Our mission is to complement rather than compete with services that are now available in various communities.  We accomplish this mission by providing esoteric and specialized testing services by  providing  technologies and services as rapidly as they become clinically relevant and financially feasible, and by ensuring the continuing local availability of many specialized laboratory tests and services.  We are one of the first hospital laboratories to have the second generation Beckman Coulter total laboratory automated system.  As one of Ohio’s largest clinical laboratories, with more than 300 employees, and with annual revenues of $30 million in 2000, we perform diagnostic procedures on specimens from approximately 1,800 patients each day.
